| Concept | Unit transfusion management |
| Description | Procedure to transfer a unit of blood or its components from a donor to a recipient to replace missing blood elements. |
| Use | Use to record a unit blood transfusion procedure. Additional structured and detailed information about the transfusion can be captured using purpose-specific archetypes inserted into the 'Additional details' slot, where required. Specific timings related to a transfusion can be managed in one of two ways:
|
| Misuse | Not to be used to record the action of a complete transfusion that may include several units. Use the ACTION.whole_transfusion_management.v0 archetype for this purpose. Not to be used to record the order for a transfusion. Use the INSTRUCTION.service_request.v1 archetype for this purpose. Not to be used to record other types of transfusions (Bone Marrow Transfusions (Transplants), Stem Cell Transfusions, Immunoglobulin Therapy, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections and Clotting Factor Concentrates). When used in conjunction with the CLUSTER.transfusion_unit archetype, ensure that there is no redundant information. |
| Purpose | To record details about the procedure of a transfusion of a blood product unit. |
