| Concept | Intracranial pressure |
| Description | Intracranial pressure |
| Use | recording measurements of pressure within the cranial cavity (intracranial space), typically obtained via invasive neuromonitoring devices (e.g., intraventricular catheter or intraparenchymal probe), especially in critical care or neurosurgical settings) |
| Misuse | where the measurement is not actually intracranial pressure, such as using it for general blood pressure, non-intracranial vascular pressures, or estimated/non-invasive surrogate values that are not true ICP measurements from appropriate intracranial monitoring devices.Do not record IBP, NIBP, or intracranial temperature. |
| Purpose | Intracranial pressure (ICP) reflects the pressure inside the skull and the balance between brain tissue, cerebrospinal fluid, and intracranial blood volume. It is used clinically to monitor and prevent brain injury by assessing risk of reduced cerebral perfusion and herniation. |
