ConceptEnvironmental Measurement
DescriptionQuantitative measurement of an environmental parameter.
Use

Use to record quantitative results of environmental components measured by some sensor, device or monitoring station.
Examples include but are not limited to:

  • outdoor PM10, ozone and NO2 levels measured by public monitoring stations tracking air quality
  • CO2 concentrations in a patients home measured by an indoor climate monitor
  • amount of precipitation, solar radiation, wind speed or pollen levels in a patients home environment measured by a mobile weather station
  • ambient noise levels measured by a smart device or wearable sensor
Misuse

Not to be used for:

  • summarizing an episode of exposure (EVALUATION.exposure)
  • documenting a reaction to an exposure (CLUSTER.adverse_reaction_event) or risk of a potential reaction (EVALUATION.adverse_reaction_risk)
  • screening for the presence or absence of environmental factors (OBSERVATION.physical_environment_screening) or exposures (OBSERVATION.exposure_screening)
  • recording measurement results obtained in a laboratory and point of care test setting (OBSERVATION.laboratory_test_result, CLUSTER.laboratory_test_analyte) or from a test performed by the patient (OBSERVATION.self_test_result)
PurposeTo record the objective and quantitative measurement results or observations of any environmental parameter obtained by some sensor, device or monitoring station.

protocol
Device / station detailsDevice / station details: Details of the measuring device used or the measuring station that recorded the measurement result.
Using the openEHR-EHR-CLUSTER.device.v1 archetype, for example, the name, properties, and other information regarding the measuring device or measuring station can be recorded.
Slot archetypes
This slot is open to all Cluster archetypes.
ExtensionExtension: Additional information required to capture local content or to align with other reference models/formalisms.
For example: local information requirements or additional metadata to align with FHIR or CIMI equivalents.
Slot archetypes
This slot is open to all Cluster archetypes.
data
ComponentComponent: Identifies the environmental parameter being measured or observed.
For example PM10, PM2.5, ozone, temperature, relative humidity, or CO₂ concentration. Coding with an external terminology is recommended.
Choice of:
  •  Coded Text
  •  Text
Measurement resultMeasurement result: Quantitative value of the environmental measurement.
For example "11.0 µg/m³". The reference model of this data type includes attributes for accuracy, reference ranges and normal status.
DescriptionDescription: Narrative description of the environmental measurement or observation.
May be used to provide additional information that is not represented by the other data elements.
Environmental domainEnvironmental domain: Defines the broad environmental domain to which the measurement belongs.
Examples include air quality, weather, noise, and water quality. Coding with an external terminology is recommended.
Choice of:
  •  Coded Text
  •  Text
EnvironmentEnvironment: Defines the environmental setting or context in which the measurement was obtained.
For example, it can be used to record whether the measurement has taken place in an indoor or outdoor environment, or the setting in which the measurement was performed, such as at home or in the workplace. Coding with an external terminology is recommended.
Choice of:
  •  Coded Text
  •  Text
InterpretationInterpretation: Single word, phrase or brief description that represents the qualitative or interpretive assessment of the environmental measurement, where applicable.
For example, "unremarkable", "critical", or "no relevant burden." etc. Coding with an external terminology is recommended.
Choice of:
  •  Coded Text
  •  Text
Environmental detailsEnvironmental details: Can be used to record additional information describing the environmental context of the measurement.
For example, ambient temperature or atmospheric pressure at the time of measurement can be recorded using the "Environmental conditions" CLUSTER archetype.
Slot archetypes
This slot is open to all Cluster archetypes.
events
Any eventAny event: Default, unspecified point in time or interval event which may be explicitly defined in a template or at run-time.
